The Clarens Trout Fishing Experience
Trout fishing in the Free State Province is centred principally on the beautiful town of Clarens, nestled in the foothills of the majestic Maluti Mountains. Most of the fishing is in stillwater, but the Little Caledon River is accessible in places to stream fishers.
Winters in the Eastern Free State regularly produce night time temperatures well below freezing, which in turn causes heavy snowfalls, whilst the daytime temperatures can rise well into the teens with beautiful clear skies. Many small streams and cascades freeze during the winter months releasing notable quantities of clear sparkling water during the spring thaws. These ice expanses add greatly to the magnificent winter mountain scenery. This is trout fishing country at its absolute best!
An attribute that all top anglers possess is their familiarity with the feeding habits of their quarry. Here are just some of the names you will become familiar with are:
Walker's Killer, Griffith's Gnat, Rat-faced Mc Dougal, Mrs. Simpson, Kaufman's Lake Dragon, Gold-ribbed Hare's Ear, Bead-head Woolly Bugger and Damsel Nymph to name but a few.
